Emiliano J. Buis
Emiliano J. Buis is a CILRAP Research Fellow and Professor of Public International Law (Law School) and Ancient Greek (Department of Classics) at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina. He is also Professor of International Law and Human Rights at the Central University (UNICEN) in Azul. A Permanent Researcher at the CONICET (National Research Council for Science and Technology), he holds the highest category for research status at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of Argentina. He is currently the Academic Director of the UBA Observatory of International Humanitarian Law and Head of its Legal Clinic. He is also the Co-Director of the UNICEN Center for Human Rights (CEDH), as well as the Director of the Permanent Seminar on the Theory and History of International Law (SEMPITHIDIA) at the Gioja Institute for Legal and Social Research at the UBA Law School. He is the current President of the Argentine Society for Classical Studies (AADEC).
He was Visiting Professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris 2), the Université Panthéon-Sorbonne (Paris 1) and Universidad del Pacífico in Lima, and Guest Professor at Panteion University in Athens, the International Institute for Human Rights (Fondation René Cassin) in Strasbourg, the Université de Caen-Normandie, the Democritus University of Thrace, the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM), and the Universidad de Guadalajara (Centro Universitario del Sur).
Professor Buis studied both Law and Classics at the University of Buenos Aires, earned a Master’s degree in Ancient History from Université de Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne, and holds a Ph.D. summa cum laude from the University of Buenos Aires. He was a Fellow at the Department of Classics (Brown University), the Max-Planck-Institut für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte, the Harvard University Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C., the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation in Athens, the Center for Epigraphical and Palaeographical Studies at Ohio State University, and the Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton University. He was also Global Fellow at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs and a Postdoctoral ECOS-Sud Researcher at the Centre de Recherche sur les Droits de l’Homme et Droit Humanitaire (Université de Paris 2 Panthéon-Assas). He was legal adviser at the Direction of International Security and Nuclear Affairs (DIGAN) of the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
His interdisciplinary research interests focus on the intersection of international law, ancient history, classical philology, and philosophy. He is currently investigating the performative dimensions of international law, including its emotional and material physicality, and the political origins of interstate normativity in pre-modern times.
