Purpose
The Centre for International Law Research and Policy (CILRAP) contributes to international law research, knowledge-generation and -dissemination for practitioners, policy makers, researchers and others. Its knowledge platform has grown to integrate scholarship, publishing, and other forms of knowledge-transfer, informed by widely recognized practical needs, with a view to contributing to strengthened international law and increased world order.
CILRAP promotes ‘communitarian scholarship’ around ideas, concepts and questions it opens up for research and discussion. Among its events are international conferences, closed expert roundtables, meetings in multilateral fora, and supervisions of fellows and young scholars. Select news are available here.
CILRAP owns the independent Torkel Opsahl Academic EPublisher (TOAEP) which has published more than 920 authors in five publication series (enjoying more than 50 book reviews in journals and yearbooks). CILRAP has produced and maintains nine substantial thematic libraries online. It offers services such as CILRAP Film (with more than 570 films), CILRAP Podcast, CILRAP Conversations and Lexsitus, and grants the M.C. Bassiouni Justice Award. This short film gives a basic overview of some of CILRAP’s activities, with detailed information on its work through the menu links on the present page.
CILRAP’s Case Matrix Network (CMN) department engages in knowledge-transfer and capacity development and has been active in more than 30 countries. It seeks to empower those working on core international crimes cases or documentation, by providing access to legal information, legal expertise, and open access tools in the CMN Knowledge Hub (including I-DOC).
The Centre is incorporated as an international non-profit organization in Brussels, Belgium, by Royal Decree WL 22/15.887 dated 15 June 2010, with the incorporation number 0827.424.153.
